Are you using these pick up lines?
29 Nov 2009 | 10:57 pmHey baby what's your sign? The above pick up line was left behind in the 70's with high waist, bell bottom pants and gold medallions nestled in a thick patch of chest hair. Unfortunately, as man grew more erect (insert Beavis and Butthead snorts and snickers here) pick up lines went south to the days of amoebas. I am very sure you can add to this list of 5 worst pick up lines. Realized you've used these lines too often? Get some tips on dating. Permalink | Leave a comment » -

Stamping out shark finning in China
29 Nov 2009 | 8:56 pmIt’s a marketing campaign fit for a sea predator. Two organizations, Shark Savers and WildAid, are joining forces to aggressively promote the end of the shark fin industry in China. Their strategy is to plaster cities with bus-stop billboards. Supporters, whether inside or outside Asia, can fund one billboard, starring Yao Ming, for $100 a year. Reports Dive Photo Guide: According to the campaign, last year, WildAid had 200 billboards in Beijing for 3 months. In a survey, 19% of Beijingers responding remembered having seen the boards and 82% of those people said they would stop or… -
How a governor's wife moves into the limelight
29 Nov 2009 | 8:30 pmA fascinating new New York Times article speculates whether Jenny Stanford—wife of embattled South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford—is making a leap for the limelight. Even if you’re not particularly interested in politics, the article provides a thoughtful window into the rise of a public figure. There’s also a utopia for the politics fanatic. How to take your site to the next level
29 Nov 2009 | 5:32 pmDeb Ng is the founder of Freelance Writing Jobs. She recently explained what it took to build her blog into the successful site that it is today. Here are the first three factors: 1. I put in more than an hour or two each day—My blog became a full time job. If I wasn’t blogging, I was planning the next day’s posts, analyzing traffic patterns, and networking with others. It’s a day job, it’s a night job, and it’s a weekend and holiday job. 2. I read everything I could about traffic, community, monetization and other strategies needed to become a successful…

Twitter Declared Most Popular English Word of 2009
29 Nov 2009 | 10:56 pmWhile Twitter may have taken second place in Bing’s 10 most searched topics of 2009, we’ve now learned that it has become top dog in something far bigger: the entire English language. The Global Language Monitor, which tracks language trends, has once again compiled and released its yearly list of the most popular words and phrases within the English language. In 2008, the #1 most popular word was “change” (referring to the mantra of the top name of 2008, Barack Obama). However, Obama has been supplanted this year by the 140 character sensation that is Twitter. Yes,… -
The Top 10 Bing Searches of 2009 (Hint: Twitter’s #2)
29 Nov 2009 | 10:02 pmIt isn’t even December yet, but Microsoft’s Bing search engine is already announcing its top ten most searched topics of 2009, as well as the two celebrities that were binged more than actress Megan Fox. The new Microsoft “decision engine” has only been in service since June, but Bing has apparently analyzed billions of search queries in order to create a list of the ten most searched topics of the year, Bing’s version of “trending topics.” Six of the top ten searches referred to specific individuals while only one search term referred to a website or… -

In the final weeks, we’ll highlight your picks and explore the wider web trends of 2009. If you haven’t… -
Tweetie 2.1 For iPhone Now LIVE in the App Store
29 Nov 2009 | 2:18 pmTweetie 2.1, the latest version of the popular iPhone Twitter client, went live in the app store today. As we mentioned in our preview earlier this week, new features include support for Twitter Lists, the new Twitter retweets feature and geolocation. The new version is free to existing Tweetie 2 users. As we wrote in our complete review: Lists support is a big deal and thus far, it looks like Tweetie 2 for the iPhone handles the process in a very robust and intuitive way. When you click on the “More” tab in Tweetie 2, you are now presented with a listing of every list you subscribe to… -
Twitter Ads Are Evil: Here’s Why
29 Nov 2009 | 1:11 pmAdvertisers are frustrated. You’re all having direct conversations with friends on Twitter, Facebook, blogs and the rest while totally bypassing the mass mediums they understand. Rather than consuming content all day on TV, in newspapers and on the radio, you’re engaging, one-to-one, with individuals you trust. They can’t get in the middle of that. They hate it. So it’s perhaps predictable that we’re experiencing the rise of in-stream Twitter advertising. How do you get inside those conversations? “You pay to do it!”, they exclaim. Ah yes, so suddenly…

Bing’s 2009 Top Search Terms: Michael Jackson Beats Out Twitter
29 Nov 2009 | 9:43 pmIt’s that time of year again when we see each search engine roll out their top search queries for the year. Scrubbed for pornography and other NSFW stuff, of course. And also manipulated in other ways, like taking out old popular terms, to make sure the list is interesting, if not actually representative of anything, statistically speaking. Here are Bing’s top searches for 2009. I hope nothing important happens in December that will force a revision. Michael Jackson took the top spot, edging out Twitter: Top 2009 Bing Trending Topics: Michael Jackson Twitter Swine Flu Stock Market… -
Twitter Doesn’t Track The Zeitgeist. Only 2 Percent Of Tweets Overlap With Search Trends.
29 Nov 2009 | 9:31 pmWhenever you want to take a reading of the current zeitgeist, popular search terms can tell you a lot about what’s on people’s minds. Right now, for instance, the hottest search terms on Google Trends include “lakewood police shooting,” “tiger woods mistress,” “surviving Christmas,” and “cyber monday 2009 deals.” If you look at Trending Topics on Twitter, however, you’ll see “#isitme,” “Google Wave,” and “Soul Train Awards.” I suspect only the last one might make it as a trending search term. -
Email Of The Week: Journalism School Language Police
29 Nov 2009 | 7:53 pmIt’s that time again – for the ridiculous email of the week award. And while Video Professor really wins this week’s award, we’re going to add one more to the list. Gabrielle, a student at Drake University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, writes to tell us that, according to the Associated Press Stylebook, the word website really should be written as Web site: To Whom It May Concern: This note is simply meant to inform your organization, TechCrunch, of an error found in your article featured on the The Washington Post Web site entitled “How… -
Calling Twitter’s Bluff
29 Nov 2009 | 6:43 pmEver since FriendFeed was sold to Facebook, we’ve been told over and over again that the company and its community were toast. And as if to underline the fact, FriendFeed’s access to the Twitter firehose was terminated and vaguely replaced with a slow version that is currently delivering Twitter posts between 20 minutes and two hours after their appearance on Twitter. At the Realtime CrunchUp, Bret Taylor confirmed this was not a technical but rather a legal issue. Put simply, Twitter is choking FriendFeed to death. What’s odd about this is that most observers consider FriendFeed a… -
Can India “Jugaad” Its Way To More Angel Investing?
29 Nov 2009 | 4:49 pmThere was one complaint I heard over and over again from Indian entrepreneurs during my three weeks shuttling between Delhi, Jaipur, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune: There aren’t enough angel investors in India. Now, truth be told, that’s a complaint I also hear in the American heartland, in Canada, in Europe, in Africa, in China and, well, pretty much everywhere I’ve traveled to over the last few years. I’m not sure people ever feel they’ve got enough money being thrown their way. But there is definitely something that makes Silicon Valley and Israel different from almost everywhere…

Getting meta
29 Nov 2009 | 2:17 amWikipedia contains facts about facts. It's a collection of facts from other places.Facebook doesn't have your friends. It has facts about your friends.Google is at its best when it gives you links to links, not the information itself.Over and over, the Internet is allowing new levels of abstraction. Information about information might be worth more than the information itself. Which posts should I read? Which elements of the project are at risk? Who is making the biggest difference to the organization?Right now, there's way too much stuff and far too little information about that stuff. -
Boundary makers
28 Nov 2009 | 2:38 amSome artists continually seek to tear down boundaries, to find new powder, new territory, new worlds to explore. They're the ones that hop the fence to get to places no one has ever been.Other artists understand that they need to see the edges of the box if they're going to create work that lasts. No fence, no art. Can't do both at the same time. My guess is that you're already one kind of person or the other. When people present you with an opportunity/problem, what's your first reaction? Some people immediately start looking for loopholes or weak boundaries. "You didn't say we couldn't do… -
The people you should listen to
27 Nov 2009 | 2:34 amWho do you listen to?Who are you trying to please?Which customers, relatives, bloggers, pundits, bosses, peers and passers by have influence over your choices? Should the Pulitzer judges decide what gets written, or the angry boss at the end of the hall so influence the products you pitch? Should the buyer at Walmart be the person you spend all your time trying to please? Your nosy neighbor? The angry trolls that write to the newspaper? The customer you never hear from?Just for a second, think about the influence, buying power, network and track record of the people you listen to the most. -

Thirsty
25 Nov 2009 | 2:30 amI've noticed that people who read a lot of blogs and a lot of books also tend to be intellectually curious, thirsty for knowledge, quicker to adopt new ideas and more likely to do important work.I wonder which comes first, the curiosity or the success?

You Need to See These Case Studies Before They’re Gone
29 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amHave you ever intentionally ignored something only to find out that you’ve been a fool for doing so? This weekend I discovered what a fool I’ve been for ignoring a resource that could have been helping me make my business a lot more profitable. Many of you will have heard of Jeff Walker and his wildly successful ‘Product Launch Formula‘ before. What Timberland Taught Me About Retail
29 Nov 2009 | 12:04 pmUPDATE: I changed this post around 100% after a conversation with Pat Phelan. He was upset at my handling of the post, and I think I can see his point. More about that in a subsequent post. I am completely frustrated with the state of face-to-face retail. Upon watching a commercial for the Timberland Earthkeepers brand boot, I was hooked. I wanted a pair. As I need new boots for winter, I thought this was a serendipitous opportunity. So, I marched into the nearest Timberland store (about a half hour from home), and asked to try out the new Earthkeepers. Only, they didn’t have any. I… -
Work When They Slack- Overnight Success

How Could New Ideas Change Education
27 Nov 2009 | 4:45 pmThe other day, I went to MTV Networks to hang out with Kenny Miller and I dragged along my friend Faith Legendre from Webex/Cisco. I had no idea what Kenny would share with me. A visit with him is serendipitous as Kenny is MTVN’s “cool hunter” guy. He fixes weird things. He finds new models. So, what was on Kenny’s mind? Education. Kenny, or rather MTV, has partnered up with some folks to work on GetSchooled.com. Essentially, the site hopes to work on the problem of the school dropout rate, and secondarily, the college admissions rate. The stats that Kenny gave me were… -

Turn a Lightbulb into a Mini-Terrarium [Plants]
29 Nov 2009 | 2:00 pmWhy limit your mini-terrarium output to plain old jars? You can reuse a burned out light bulb to create a smaller, desk-friendly nature space. Earlier this year we shared a technique for turning a wine bottle into a terrarium and we followed it up by building moss terrariums in glass jars and dishes. Now an industrious Instructables user has taken the humble light bulb and turned it into a tiny terrarium. For the project you'll need an old incandescent light bulb, some pliers, a screw driver, and safety goggles and gloves. Once you prep the light bulb you'll need some soil and some small… -
Make a Simple Holiday Decoration with a Tomato Cage [Holidays]

The basic design is simply wire wrapped around the inverted tomato cage to create a glowing Christmas tree shape. The hanging requires a little finesse with the monofilament line, but you can read more about that at the link below. Have a crafty and inexpensive holiday decoration to share? Let's hear about it in…

Does Speech Recognition Software Really Work?
27 Nov 2009 | 12:27 pmOne of my favorite posts from around the web last week came from our own Associate Editor Jon Morrow. He recorded a 20-minute video post for Problogger about how he works with speech recognition software to do all of his blogging. I do an awful lot of writing every week, and I’ve been thinking about trying speech recognition out in order to speed up the process. But like most people, I was afraid it was going to be more trouble than it was worth to get it working. Jon’s video made me realize how simple (and inexpensive) it will be for me to make it happen. Because it was a pretty… -
10 Things to Be Grateful For
26 Nov 2009 | 8:35 amI’ll admit it. I have a soft spot for Thanksgiving. First, because it’s an excuse for me to bake for three days. (If you need a last-minute recipe for the world’s best chocolate cream pie, I’ve got you covered.) And second, because it reminds me to quit grumbling and start noticing all of the amazing stuff I’ve got in my life. Here’s my list of 10 things I would humbly recommend you add to your own “gratitude list” this year. They’ve done great things for my business and I think they’ll do great things for yours. 1. The crummy economy I know, this seems weird. I’m not… -
Are You Getting Off Track With Your Readers?
24 Nov 2009 | 6:43 amI’ve been seeing something happen frequently among my fellow bloggers lately, but it’s most obvious to me when I receive offers to guest post on my blog. Someone pitches me a great idea. Brilliant, in fact. An idea that interests me and one I feel will interest my readers as well. So I say yes. And the person writes the post and sends it to me. They’re excited, and I’m excited too. The post begins well, and the opening is great. But as I read, something happens. The writer makes a point that’s kind of tangentially related to the paragraph before, but not at all… -
The Eminem Guide to Becoming a Writing and Marketing Machine
23 Nov 2009 | 6:56 amTen years back, my soon-to-be wife, Cindy, and I first noticed the bombarding beat for Marshall Mather’s “My Name Is.” “What an ass,” I said as the two of us sat to watch the Grammies a year later. “It’s sad he can sell so many records just by being vile. Really, how much talent can that possibly take?” “Have you heard the record?” Cindy asked. “No,” I admitted. “But I’ve heard enough to know he’s an ass.” She pursed her lips in silence as I stuttered through a series of half-articulated examples — the criticisms of others slipping through the filter of… -
The Art of the Paragraph
20 Nov 2009 | 6:11 amAnyone can write a paragraph, but not everyone knows how to write one that other people want to read. You’ve seen it: You open a book, and the whole page is one long block of text. Each sentence in the paragraph makes exactly the same point, said in a slightly different way, and you wonder why they didn’t just say it once and be done with it. Every paragraph is the same length (five lines, maybe?), whether it makes sense or not, and it gives the piece a monotonous rhythm. The paragraph makes a point without telling you why that point is important, and you can’t help…

London Calling
26 Nov 2009 | 9:49 pmI took this past week off to hang out with my family and do fun stuff (and catch up on my reading). But while I was catching up, I got caught off guard while reading a recent issue of the excellent UK-based Photoshop Creative magazine. In their Creative Forum (letters to the editor) section, I saw the following letter as their featured letter of the month: NAPP needed I’ve been buying Photoshop Creative since the very first issue and have been using Photoshop since version 4.0. I deduced to join NAPP (nat’l assn., etc.) last June, and I use the online training available. However, one… -

Mullenweg Speaks Out on Twitter, WordPress and the Question of Competition
29 Nov 2009 | 4:35 pmAfter recent comScore data showed Twitter stats leveling off as WordPress traffic continued to grow, some bloggers framed the results as an either/or proposition; if one platforms wins, the other loses. WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg has weighed in on the subject, stating that the interaction between microblogging and what he's calling "megablogging" is hardly a zero-sum game. "It's not really a 'versus,' it's an 'and'," he wrote. Sponsor "One of the many uses of Twitter is to link to and promote your blog posts (and other people's blog posts,)" he continued. "As we grow, so do they, and… -
Getting More Out of the Conversation: The Real Real-Time Challenge
29 Nov 2009 | 1:50 pmIt has been a few weeks since the ReadWriteWeb Real-Time Web Summit. Workshops ran the gamut of real-time Web applications and services. They addressed the impact of the real-time Web on search, feeds, aggregation and even branding and marketing. But several topics and terms were not discussed as much as one might have expected: "social," "interaction," and "communication." Perhaps they were assumed. But their absence from discussion spoke of something bigger; namely, our tendency to still view Web content, even real-time content, as information. Sponsor This guest post was written by Adrian…

Choosing Big Lights: AlienBees
29 Nov 2009 | 9:00 pmThe last installment of the Big Lights series is a look at AlienBees, a very popular line of studio strobes available in the US -- and recently, in Australia/NZ. But before I get into them, I will preface the post with this: Early this fall when it came time for me to pull the trigger, I was having a very difficult time deciding between the Elinchrom Quadras and the Profoto Acute line. On Assignment: Planes and Arrows
26 Nov 2009 | 9:00 pmAs part of a long-term project I am working on with a local school, I popped into the gym after school recently to shoot archery practice. And it brought to mind a quickie tip for lighting big spaces.A gym is a big-volume place, full of ugly light. You can't hope to light the whole thing very effectively with a few speedlights. But you can light selective planes and create the illusion that large, 3-D areas are lit -- even if you can only place lights at the periphery, lest your lights get skewered. __________Always start with a first look at the ambient. That's what I always do when… -

Choosing Big Lights: Profoto

Critical Mistakes Freelancers Make
28 Nov 2009 | 1:16 pmSeeing as we are all human (well, presumably whoever is reading this post anyway), we should recognize that mistakes happen. They even have that saying, “To err is human…,” which goes to show that it is not only commonplace for us to err once or twice: it is expected. But a method is behind this madness, because making mistakes is one of the major ways we learn. This is no different for freelancers.Finding our way over these bumps in the road often gives us valuable insight to take away. Psystar's predictions... they're a bit off

Some new documents have been leaked with some numbers and predictions from Psystar themselves. According to these documents, the company planned on selling 1.45 million Mac clone computers by 2011. The actual number sold so far: 768. What's even better is that these numbers are their "conservative" estimates. If you take a look at their more aggressive numbers, Psystar plans to sell 12 million by the end of 2012. Yes, you read that correctly: 12 million. With the… -

Photoshop TV is Back on the Air
24 Nov 2009 | 6:29 amHey everyone. After 2 to approximately 12 weeks of being off the air, I'm happy to say that Photoshop User TV is back. We recorded our new show on our new set in our new format last week and its up on the web. For those of you that always liked PSTV and the "edu-tainment" factor of the show, then I think you'll like it even more. For those of you that fast forwarded through all the talking to get to the tutorials I think you'll LOVE the new format. We realized that none of us have 30-40 minutes to sink into watching a show so why should any of you have to sit through a show that long. The… -
Worth-a-click
20 Nov 2009 | 6:20 amHere's a few things worth checking out as you surf around today or this weekend. • Adobe has released a beta of Lightroom 2.6 (and Camera Raw 5.6). The major thing I can see is that it now supports the Canon 7D, G11, and Nikon D3s. You can get it over at Adobe Labs if you're dying for support for those new cameras. • My brand new Photoshop Elements 8 Book for Digital Photographers (co-authored with Scott Kelby) is out in stores and online. Since Adobe released the Mac and PC version this time around we changed things to cover both. • If you're a photographer (of any level) and… -
Lightroom Sharpening – Which Brush to use?
18 Nov 2009 | 9:17 pmOver the last few months, I've done a few of those Before/After videos that involve sharpening as one of the steps. Each time I've done it, I go into Photoshop and do the sharpening there. I've noticed a number of good comment/questions asking about why I don't use the Adjustment Brush in Lightroom to sharpen instead. So it got me thinking about why. I mean, I knew sharpening was there in Lightroom and that I could selectively do it with the Adjustment Brush but I never really find myself using it. So here's the answer(s) that I've come up with: 1) Old mentality of sharpening last I've had a… -
Tip – Fading a Lightroom Preset
17 Nov 2009 | 6:19 amI've got a big article due for Photoshop User magazine this week so I'm gonna make this one short. In fact, I'm being so lazy today that I'm stealing a tip from some one else. See, for a while now I'd have to say the most common preset-related question I get is how to fade a preset. Say the effect is just too strong and you don't feel like going through each slider and lessening the amount it applies. Instead you basically want a volume control for the preset. Well the other day Piet (one of the blog readers) posted a comment pointing me to a video he's done on fading Lightroom presets. Now… -
Tip – Graduated Filter Modifier Keys
13 Nov 2009 | 5:50 amFirst off, thanks for all the great feedback on the Before/After video the other day. For those of you who watched it (and commented on it), the grayish pumpkin that I darkened was brought up a few times. I thought about trying to do something more with it, but then I showed the photo to several people including the mom in the photo. I asked about the pumpkin and the resounding answer was "What pumpkin?" - mission accomplished in my book :-) But I'll probably try to tweak it as a personal mission to see if I can add just a little color back in without looking to fakey. Tip #1: Anyway, I…

Many things to be thankful for….
26 Nov 2009 | 6:27 amThere are so many things to be thankful for, every day. Too many to list here for sure. One of those things, for me, is the readership of this blog. I am always honored by the fact that you stop by, regularly or occasionally, and for your thoughts, input, questions and critiques. It, for me, is all part of the adventure, one that is evolving for all of us almost daily. This whole idea of greeting the world with a camera in your hand has changed over time, but yet another thing to be thankful for is that while the numbers of pixels change, the basics of picture making don’t. These… -
A Different Kind of Landscape Workshop…
23 Nov 2009 | 4:12 amStrange things happen when you turn a Moose loose in Times Square. Yep, the first ever Digital Landscape Workshop Series event in the Big Apple is over. Everybody survived and to my knowledge none of our participants are currently sloshing around at the bottom of the East River wearing cement shoes, or squatting in tiger cages in the belly of a tramp steamer flying the Liberian flag and headed for the West Coast of Never To Be Seen Again. Thank goodness for that. New Yorkers once again, disproved the universal bad rap of being discourteous, brusque and just generally annoyed. Our group was… -
Heading East
16 Nov 2009 | 2:03 amYep, heading for Malaysia, courtesy of the efforts of Louis Pang, one of the premier wedding shooters in that country, and for that matter, all of Asia. Louis and I got to know each other when he took my lighting class at Santa Fe this past year, and the irrepressible Louis had ideas. When he gets ideas, actions follow. He went home, put together a plan, launched a website, and off we go. Or are going. First week in February, Drew and I will be in Kuala Lumpur, working with photogs from all over Malaysia and points east. Here’s the link. We’ll do a series of one day intensives,… -
Letter to a Young Photographer….
9 Nov 2009 | 5:43 amLectured last week at the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism. In the photojournalism department, the students all had that traditional mix of energy, enthusiasm, angst, and doubt so typical of that time in your life when you have just picked up a camera and are looking at it, wondering where it will lead you. The usual mix of questions are ever present: Who do I work for? Can I make a living? Will I ever be any good at this? Will my pictures have impact? Nowadays, that traditional line of questioning is accompanied by another significant set of queries. What is the future of… -
New York Frame of Mind…..
6 Nov 2009 | 6:57 amYankees won. Cool. I’ve been a Yankee fan before I even knew anything about NY. We lived in Cleveland when I was a kid, and my dad would only bring me to the ballpark when those damn Yankees were playing. He brought me down to the third base seats and Casey Stengel was standing in the coaches box. My dad yelled, “Hey Case!” Stengel was standing there, thumbs hooked in his belt, and gave me a wink and a quick wave. Been a Yankee fan ever since, though, like Yogi, I did have a hard time liking anybody in pinstripes back when The Boss was in full cry. Corny, right? But hey, it…

An Interview with Set Designer Raffy Tesoro
29 Nov 2009 | 12:36 pmIn this post Dustin Carbonera interviews Set Designer Raffy Tesoro. Raffy has answered a number of questions as well as walking us through some of the shots he’s been involved with creating sets for. Everybody seems to be into photography nowadays. Everyone wants to be the person behind the lens and capture a beautiful frame. Everyone wants to be that person who’ll be praised by people because he was able to come up with a perfect shot, of course, with the help of the oh-so-powerful Photoshop. Sadly, it seems that the name of the game today (for some) is not really how well you do… -
10 Ways Photography Has Changed My Life
29 Nov 2009 | 6:21 amIn this post Lisa Newton from Travelin’ Local shares 10 ways that her life has been changed by photography. Has Photography Changed Your Life? It has certainly changed mine, for the better. Not too long ago, before cameras became digital, I, like many baby boomers, used film based cameras, and mainly used my camera to take pictures of my children as they grew up. You know the standard ones that are in every family album–first day pictures, visiting grandma pictures, first Christmas pictures, vacation pictures, and so on. Looking back, that was all fun, and it certainly will always… -
The Glass Menagerie: Choosing your Best Lenses
28 Nov 2009 | 12:08 pmImage by canonsnapper ‘Choosing the right lenses is tougher than picking the right camera. Kim Brebach from Get the Picture explains why.’ Traveling Lightly A wise photographer once said: the bigger the camera, the less likely you’ll have it with you when you want it. Most of us use our cameras to shoot kids and pets, sports, city- or landscapes and occasional portraits. Most of us want a camera that’s easy to cart around and can take a few knocks. Pro shooters who travel light have the same need, and legends like Galen Rowell have proved that you can produce stunning results… -
This Week in the Digital Photography School Forums (22-28 Nov ‘09)
28 Nov 2009 | 6:01 amWeekly Assignment First, Happy Thanksgiving to all our American readers. I hope you had an enjoyable holiday! We finished our Kinetics assignment this week, and one of the things that really showed up was that you can create great abstract shots with a little thought and some interesting techniques. Our winner this week was Keikyu’s All Powerful Blake. This shot had kind of an otherworldly / 80’s sci-fi sort of look to it, which was created by zooming the lens from 18m to 70mm while Blake had a string of Christmas lights wrapped around him. The lights really helped pull this image… -

While I know not all DPS readers are in the US I thought the theme of Thanksgiving was something we all could participate in as we do this week’s photography challenge. The challenge is to photograph something that you’re thankful for OR to share a thanksgiving shot that you took over the last few days – and then to share the shot in comments below. Use your imagination and feel free to interpret…

30 November, 2009 - Leica S2 Field and Studio Review
29 Nov 2009 | 12:58 pmIt isn't often that a major camera maker introduces a totally new camera system. The Leica S2 is that company's entry into the larger-than-35mm market (call it medium format if you will) and it has now been some 15 months since the S2 system was first announced. Shipments of the S2 body and its first two lenses will begin in early January. During November I have been fortunate to have had a full production Leica S2 with both the 70mm and 180mm lenses for testing, both on location and in the studio. Leica is still tweaking the camera's firmware, but the camera that I've been using is… -
25 November, 2009 - A Call For Support
25 Nov 2009 | 4:02 amIt's easy to take someone or something for granted. They're there. They've been there for a while, and they'll likely be there in the future. We'll maybe not. I'm referring, of course, to this site – The Luminous Landscape. With nearly 4,000 pages of content, many terabytes of traffic, and more than a million unique visitors each month, just the cost of our servers and bandwidth is considerable. Add to that the time and effort of our staff and contributors, including programers and customer service, and our costs are significant. What do we charge? Nothing. This site is free to anyone… -
23 November, 2009 - Phase One 645DF Camera Field Report
22 Nov 2009 | 2:41 pmMost medium format users know by now that Phase One is the controlling shareholder at Mamiya, and for some time now has assumed responsibility for new product development, including camera bodies and lenses. These are marketed under both the Mamiya brand name as well as Phase One. Their latest camera is the Phase One 645DF, and it will begin to become available to photographers world-wide beginning next month. A couple of weeks ago, along with some 25 other photographers and instructors at the Phase One Digital Artist Series in Death Valley, I had the opportunity to spend a week working with… -
19 November, 2009 - ALPA Field Report
18 Nov 2009 | 3:51 pmUPDATE – 10:30am EST It was announced today that Christian Poulsen has decided to resign from his position as CEO of Hasselblad. Chairman of the Board, Dr. Larry Hansen will now also serve as Chief Executive Officer. This follows the recent replacement of Hasselblad USA's President Jack Showalter by Tom Olesen. I have no editorial stance on these announcements at the moment, but one has to wonder as to the nature of the changes taking place within Hasselblad and their underlaying motivations. ____________________ When it comes to technical cameras for use with digital backs few would… -
16 Nov, 2009 - Leaf Aptus II 10, The First Week
15 Nov 2009 | 2:24 pmBuying a medium format back is a serious financial committment for a pro, and the thought process involved and a photographer's initial experience with it makes for an informative and interesting read. Today's new article by Robb Williamson is on the Leaf Aptus II 10. It details his purchase decision process and his first week's shooting experience. ____________________ I don't often hand out endorsements, however, when I see something unique, entertaining, educational and very reasonably priced I must say something. Your interviews with Jay Maisel and Jeff Schewe really helped me understand…
