10 tricks happy people don’t fall for

The world, our society, and our very own minds all conspire against our happiness. I know it sounds crazy, but think about these ten things that happy people don’t believe. They’re all lies we’re told every day. Things like, “You’re in control of your life!” and “suffering is bad.” The fact is, most of us are only in control of a teeny tiny bit of our lives, and the human condition is one of suffering. Those two examples are largely lies we incorporate from society at large. Our very own mind is guilty of lying, too, though. It often tells us that we need to work harder to prove something. But that’s a dark road, since it convinces us that our happiness depends on others’ approval. That’s an unstable foundation for happiness.
Here’s my own weakness, a lie many unhappy people fall for: If only I were X, I’d be happy.
Happy people know the secret to happiness is accepting themselves–flaws and all. It’s okay to work on improving yourself–we’re always in a state of learning–but it’s not okay to berate yourself for your flaws. Focus on your strengths.
