3 ways to find the stupid stud without a stud finder
Posted by staff / September 23, 2014Let’s say you’re not one of those people particularly skilled at hearing when you happen to be knocking on the part of the wall with a stud and your stud finder’s a piece of crap; what’s a person in desperate need of a wall hanging or clock to do?
As you can probably tell, this author lives in a house with a lot of holes filled with toothpaste or hidden behind pictures when said stud could be located, but it would have saved us all a lot of grief and swearing had we had these three tips from Kit Stansley at Kinja.
Nah, pretty sure this house was built by drunk hamsters, but we bet you’ll have better luck.
Look at the Trim
Since the baseboard should be attached to the studs, look to see if you can spot where it might have been nailed. These holes—dimples—are generally filled with caulk and painted, but you may be able to spot one to identify the location of a stud. If you find one, try measuring in 16″ increments to locate the additional studs…
Use the Switch
If you don’t have any luck checking out the trim, look for switches or outlets, knowing that at least one side of an electrical box will be mounted on a stud…
