400+ former federal prosecutors say Trump obstructed justice

Posted by / May 7, 2019

Over 400 former federal prosecutors, both Democrats and Republicans, have signed a letter saying that any other person would be charged with obstruction of justice for doing what President Trump did. Over 100 of those who signed had more than 20 years of experience in the justice department.

“Each of us believes,” they wrote, “that the conduct of President Trump described in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report would, in the case of any other person not covered by the Office of Legal Counsel policy against indicting a sitting President, result in multiple felony charges for obstruction of justice.”

The Mueller report did not recommend that Trump be indicted precisely because of the Office of Legal Counsel policy against indicting a sitting president, and instead Mueller and his team left it up to William Barr to decide if such a case should be pursued.

Barr, of course, has all but exonerated Trump, angering many. Moderates Joe Manchin and Doug Jones, both Democrats who voted to confirm William Barr, have expressed remorse for their confirmations. According to a source in the justice department speaking to the AP, Mueller wrote a letter to Barr days after the report dropped. According to the source, Mueller’s letter expressed frustration that Barr’s report misrepresented the team’s findings. The Guardian has accused Barr of paving the way towards a Trump tyranny.
