Look at this happy fellow. His name is Saturn (Kronos in Greek). You know, the father of the Greek gods. Only he didn’t want his little ones to grow up and overthrow him. So he did what any rational Titan would do: eat the little buggers before they could hurt him. The painting above, aptly titled Saturn Devouring His Son, Francisco Goya exposes the madness hidden in all of us––as well as in our mythology––through the expression on Saturn’s face. This painting embodies some of the darkest themes of the Romantic period and laid important groundwork for future art.
