Limited to just two of the three falls that make up this landmark — the American and Bridal Veil Falls — it took 28,000 tons of material to stop the flow in order to study the site’s geology to consider possible changes that ended up never being made.
The Atlantic features pictures from the private collection of Maria Adair, and below is a home video shot that summer.
The icing over of Niagara Falls was certainly stunning, but these pictures are of a far rarer site we may never see again.
