21 cars that scream “American!”

No matter how hard some people try, a Prius or similar model is never going to pop to mind when the phrase “iconic American car” is uttered.
What we do think of is flashy, powerful, innovative and — occasionally — utter failure, and the cars on this list from CNN fit the bill to a Model T.
In the season of car shows across the nation on any given Saturday, it couldn’t be a better time to rev your engines for this spin down the memory lane.
Icon for: Muscle
This car, the 1971 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda, is iconic because it functions as a perfect stand-in for every high-powered muscle car that ever shredded a set of back tires. When someone says “muscle car” this is probably the car you picture inside your head.
Icon for: Fun since the early ’60s
At its best, the Mustang was, and is today, the Stutz Bearcat of the modern era. It’s a symbol of youthful exuberance, even if the person driving it retired 20 years ago.
