How to tell if you’re too smart for your job

While a change in attitude is the first thing to try when you find yourself in a funk at work, when you’ve given it everything you’ve got and still find yourself spinning your wheels and going nowhere, there’s an excellent chance that you’re too smart for your job.

It’s not always as obvious as being told you’re not allowed to use the elevator or the stairs to reach the second floor despite having to work on it (and, yes, this has been said…and clarified to make sure the insanity was real), but Liz Ryan, the CEO of Human Workplace does offer three clues that indicate your brain is bigger than your job description in this article at Inc.

1. Problem, what problem?

Doing the same thing over and over again in the exact same way never taught anyone anything. If your co-workers are only interested in repeatedly treading the same well worn paths, then it’s unlikely you’ll start expanding your skills anytime soon, according to Ryan. “Your co-workers may be the nicest people on earth, but if they don’t understand what you’re talking about when you lay out frame-shifting ideas or if they can’t hold a conversation about anything except the way they’ve always done things, you’re in the wrong place,” she writes.
