  • Unless you want grease spots all over your carpet and furniture when they come back inside (because it will not all rub off and will still be clumped under their nails and between their toes), Vaseline is a bad idea. Keeping their nails and the fur around their pads trimmed properly will limit the salt that gets caught, and washing their paws then they come back in will remove any salt and de-icing chemicals, preventing problems. I keep a small basin of water just inside the door with a towel and each foot gets a quick wash. Training a dog to wear boots is also another solution, which will also protect their pads from frostbite. There are also non staining products available for chapped pads that are much like lip balm for people.
