Creepy space suit testing robot goes up for auction
Posted by staff / September 6, 2016Always dreamed of owning a piece of NASA history? The winning bidder will have this treasure staring them down for years to come.
Only two of these Power-Driven Articulated Dummies were made for NASA in the early sixties, and its twin resides in the Smithsonian. Estimates say it could sell for as much as $80,000 at RR Auctions’ Remarkable Rarities Auction
According to Engadget:
NASA went with this robot to measure things like how much pressure was being applied by their space suits, what kind of internal pressure was being kept stable, and various other pieces of data integral to keeping astronauts safe in space.
The robot could be adjusted between 5’5″ and 6’2″ to represent the typical American male, with nylon tubes acting as its circulatory system with oil flowing through it.
Just think how thrilled anyone would be to find this under the Christmas tree.
On second thought, “thrilled” might not be the right term.
