The lake of death lurking in the Gulf of Mexico

Posted by / November 3, 2016

3,300 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico lies a very real entrance to the afterlife for any living thing unfortunate enough to find it.

It earned the name “Jacuzzi of Despair” thanks to a deadly mix of salt, methane, and hydrogen sulfide and the fact that it’s almost thirty degrees warmer than the surrounding sea. Giant mussels perch of the edge, feeding on the hydrogen sulfide and methane and have a front row seat for the demise of other creatures presumably tempted by the warmth.

Scientists were able to get a closer look at the pool using the E/V Nautilus and even noticed a few brine waterfalls out of pool.
