Hidden women of film finally get their closeup

A beautiful face has long been one of the ways films draw us in and keep us captivated, but for decades the faces that made those faces look so fine lay in obscurity. Not any more, thanks to the work of the Chicago Film Society’s Leader Ladies Project.

In the age of analog films, China Girls were used by processing technicians to check skin tone levels in the final product. Audiences generally didn’t see them, though their role was vital to ensuring Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, and company didn’t end up with an unnatural pallor.

Julie Buck and Karin Segal put together the following reel so they finally get the spotlight they deserve.
