When you think of rats, you probably think of something like this:

And if that’s what you think of, then why on earth would colleges allow frats, you might wonder. And you wouldn’t be wrong. Students drink more and their grade point average drops when they join a frat. But frats do something useful for university: they provide a disciplinary structure that helps organize the university. Deans can pass along information, criticisms, or demands to frat leaders, who in turn can tell their people.
