See the dramatic effects of long term sun damage
Posted by staff / June 7, 2012Scientists can’t exactly force someone to expose half their face to more sun in order to show the dramatic effect such exposure can have, but if a delivery man of twenty-eight years happens to walk in the door, they’re in luck.
According to the New England Journal of Medicine:
The [69-year-old] patient reported that he had driven a delivery truck for 28 years. Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays transmit through window glass, penetrating the epidermis and upper layers of dermis. Chronic UVA exposure can result in thickening of the epidermis and stratum corneum, as well as destruction of elastic fibers.
The beginning of summer couldn’t be a better time to highlight these effects, especially for those of us who grew up with far too casual an attitude toward sun protection. Cover up and you’ll thank yourself later.
