It is true that there are certain iconic photographs that become etched into the collective psyche of a generation, or a country, or segment of society. I have not looked at all of the examples from your post, but two photographs that always stand out for me are the sailor kissing the girl in Times Square at the surrender of the Nazis to end WWII in Europe. And the other is the famous photos of the black civil rights protesters being hosed down by fire hoses, and held at bay with snarling German Shepherds. This latter group of photos sent a clear message around the world. Segregation was de facto, it was wrong, and it needed to change.
I have always been interested in photography, and when I lived in New York, would often go to International Center for Photography on 5th avenue.
