Boeing’s luxury flying boat
Posted by staff / February 17, 2011If you thought first-class on an intercontinental flight was rolling in style, prepare to feel like a passenger flying coach crammed between a screaming baby and flatulent old man. Back before air travel adopted the motto “stuff people in like sardines,” companies like Boeing manufactured airplanes that epitomized flying luxury.
In the 1930s and 1940s, the Boeing 314 Clipper carried deep-pocketed folks off to exotic destinations like Hawaii and China in just a few days of flying time. The clunky aircraft featured seven swanky sleeping compartments, a 14-seat formal dining room, and a private honeymoon suite in the tail of the plane.
