How the GDP of US cities measures up to entire countries
Posted by staff / July 22, 2011Despite a financial crisis, the GDPs of certain US cities still challenge that of countries of all sizes around the world, as Zara Matheson of the Martin Prosperity Institute discovered when compiling the above map.
For example, who would have thought that Switzerland and Chicago had anything more in common than a lot of snow, though the Windy City tops the Swiss GDP by seven billion dollars? Even our neighbor to the north is barely outstripping the GDP of New York City alone and falls behind if Philly is added into the mix.
As Richard Florida of The Atlantic noted, Japanese management expert Kenichi Ohmae appears to have hit the nail on the head when he predicted city-states were the future of the world economy.

People forget that Canada is approx 1/10 the population of the U.S., therefore, if you take into account population we would be 15.7 Trillion GDP if our populatoins were equal. I know not totally scientific but 1/10 of the population of the U.S. can only produce and use so much based on population only. But, we like being your neighbour… 🙂
