10 weird and wonderful water towers

Church spires may be more picturesque when it comes to adorning a landscape but there’s no better way to brand a modern town than with the water tower. WebUrbanist has collected ten great water towers that have put their people on the map.

Built in the midst of the Great Depression, the smile over Grand Forks was dismantled in 2009, and though the new one does sport a grin, we can only hope it, too, means happy days will be here again.

Corncob water tower, Rochester, MN

The “World’s Largest Ear of Corn” standing tall over the Seneca Foods plant was also built during the Great Depression and is lit up at night to never let anyone forget that corn is king.

No trip to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport is complete without catching a glimpse of the Rosemont water tower, created in 1988, the one bright spot in traffic while you worry about making your flight.
