Colleges and universities snapping up .XXX domains
Posted by staff / November 14, 2011Colleges and universities have gone on a .XXX domain shopping spree and it has nothing to do with enticing alumni donations through amateur naughty professor videos. Nope, schools like the University of Missouri and Washington University are grabbing the domains in a defensive move to protect their good names.
The .XXX domain launches in the next month, but any organization with a trademark can reserve a spot for about $200 per domain. The so-called “sunrise phase” is aimed at thwarting domain squatters who look to turn a profit by selling the sites.
“We don’t want someone coming across our trademark on a porn site. God only knows what they’d come up with,” Terry Robb, director of information technology at the University of Missouri-Columbia, told CBS News.
