A few drinks may be good for your love life
Posted by staff / December 10, 2010If you and your special other like to get cozy over a few cocktails, new research suggests that’s a good thing. Couples who drink together feel more intimate and report fewer relationship problems. Of course, there’s a caveat: The benefits are associated with relatively light drinking, one to three drinks.
Heavier drinking, four or more, was associated with decreased intimacy and increased relationship problems, although the harmful effects were buffered when partners drank together versus apart, says Ash Levitt, a postdoctoral fellow at the University at Buffalo.
The study also found that the associations between drinking and relationships were stronger and more numerous for women than for men, suggesting that alcohol use plays a larger role in romantic relationships for women than it does for men.
