Yesterday was the December solstice, the shortest day of the year, so we thought we’d celebrate by sharing some photos of nocturnal animals.
Join us on Facebook for more incredible footage, photos and stories.
1. Galapagos Green Turtle
While nesting space is limited and predators loom on the volcanic Galapagos Islands, these clever turtles have evolved to make the best of it. The females make their nests under the cover of night, even making a false one next to it to fool predators.
2. Spectral Tarsier
Each tarsier’s eyeball is actually as big as its brain, allowing it to see at night. This makes them look strange enough without seeing them use their ability to turn their head through 180 degrees.
