Charge your mobile phone by yelling at it?
Posted by staff / May 9, 2011Scientists at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, South Korea have successfully created a technology that converts sound into electricity. That means your mobile phone could charge up every time you talk into it. The louder you talk, the quicker it charges. Good news for users looking for a battery boost, bad news for everyone around them with ears.
The device uses tiny strands of zinc oxide – the main ingredient of calamine lotion – sandwiched between two electrodes. A sound-absorbing pad on top vibrates when sound waves hit it, causing the tiny zinc oxide wires to compress and release. This generates electrical current that can then be used to charge a battery.
