The country without a country

The Order of Malta is a unique country––unique in the dictionary sense of the word, in that it’s a one-of-a-kind country. That’s because it is the only country in the world without a country. That is, it does not have a territory of its own. It has buildings, but those buildings are not technically territory––they are extraterritorial territory, like an embassy. This video explains the history of the Order of Malta from the pre-Crusade period when the Order was a medical institution to the Crusade period when it was a military institution and then beyond, when it became a sovereign entity.
