‘Drag queen’ Barbie: Sexy and she knows it
Posted by staff / August 19, 2012Mattel’s marketing of the iconic Barbie doll has tried to appeal to a more career-oriented class of gal, dressed as everything from a paratrooper to an ambassador for world peace, so it should come as no surprise that the company is now reaching across the gender divide to embrace the designs of longtime fans, Phillipe and David Blond, for what has been dubbed ‘drag queen’ Barbie.
Cathy Cline, vice president of marketing for Mattel’s girls’ brands, told The New York Times: ‘One of the great things about Barbie is that she continues to push the envelope. Barbie doesn’t worry about what other people think.’
Though Phillipe Blond might be as close to a real-life Barbie that we’ve ever seen, his brother, David, says the resemblance in only “…loosely…based on Phillipe and this character that he plays within our little Blond world.”
And let’s face it, Barbies are meant for playing, be the players boys or girls. We wouldn’t mind seeing a few outfits for Ken, though, too.
