Happy nature news! Wild tiger numbers are climbing
Posted by staff / April 12, 2016In a world full of bad ecological news, it’s refreshing to hear some tidbit of glad tidings.
The World Wildlife Fund estimates the population of wild tigers has increased twenty percent in the last six years, specifically in the countries of Bhutan, Russia, India, and Nepal.
Of course, the estimated total is only 3,890, down from approximately 100,000 in the early 1900s, and they’re not out of the woods yet.
“Every part of the tiger — from whisker to tail — is traded in illegal wildlife markets, feeding a multi-billion dollar criminal network,” the organization says.
Still, it never hurts to be on the upswing.
