How to overcome Gen Y stereotypes in the workplace
Posted by staff / November 16, 2009It’s hard for us Millenials (also known as Gen Y) to enter the workforce without noticing the polarizing effect it often causes in the office. Much of this is due to how we’re portrayed in the media as lazy, entitled, the list goes on. In order to ward off a tense workplace atmosphere, you have to highlight the positives of your generation, and disprove the negative stereotypes. Here’s how:
Our generation is tech savvy. We grew up with technology and can easily adapt to it. Make sure you live up to this hype – it’ll put you miles ahead of those who just can’t keep up.
In order to ward off the lazy stereotype, be sure to master the tasks you’re responsible for. And when you’ve done that, ask for another assignment – don’t wait around for one to be handed to you. This demonstrates initiative, dedication, and ability.

Huh? I’m surprised at the negative rap because I use the stereotypical Millenial description as one that promotes change, multitasks, innovates, and commits to corporations and organization that appreciate what they bring to the table and how they bring it. I use this group of people as the new bar, and ask my audience often times to learn from them.
I say if you do your thing, do it well, embrace change, and pay it forward always…you’ll get where you’re trying to go.
