Illinois set to banish Trump from ballot without tax returns
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 28, 2019The Illinois State Senate passed legislation that will bar President Trump from the 2020 ballot unless Trump releases his tax returns. The bill still needs to make it through the House, which is controlled by Democrats. Then it will need to be approved by the Illinois governor…who is also Democrat. The governor has not yet weighed in on the issue, but it seems likely that he will sign it.
State Sen. Tony Munoz has said, “If you want to run for vice president or president of the United States, hey, what’s wrong with providing your tax returns for the past five years? If you’ve got nothing to hide, you shouldn’t worry about anything. That’s how I see it.”
State Republicans, however, have called the bill an embarrassment, saying that it “is being pushed by a far-leftist organization from the city of Chicago that wants to be able to get up and chirp about the president of the United States.”
If the law succeeds in Illinois, it might empower other states considering the same option, such as California, Hawaii, and New Jersey.
President Trump has continuously refused to release his tax returns, claiming that they are under audit. His refusal has led to widespread criticism from his detractors, with many coming to believe that the returns will reveal fraud.
