Nazaré, Portugal serves up nearly-lethal surf [video]

Carlos Burle, Sylvio Mancusi, Rodrigo Koxa, Maya Gabeira, Felipe “Gordo” Cesarano, Hugo Vau, Eric Rebiere, Pedro Scooby, Andrew Cotton and Garrett McNamara were on hand to take advantage of the wild morning, but Gabeira suffered a close call after she was knocked unconscious and had to be rushed to the hospital after surfing what might be the biggest waves ever conquered by a woman.
In the first video, Surf, by Hélio Valentim, you can get a sense of the beasts offered up by the gods — or demons — of the sea, while the second video shows the terrifying moments of Gabeira’s rescue.
She does want to reassure everyone that she will live to surf another day, though:
“My dear friends, a broken ankle. Nothing more… Some salt water, but you know! I just need some prayer for a speedy recovery!!! Love u all,” she says.
