Pollution of Indonesian waters on full display in surf photos
Posted by staff / August 14, 2013 Laura ChasePSFKsurf photographyZak NoyleIt’s rare one sees surf photography featuring anything but beautiful blue waves, but the incredible surfing available off the remote Untung Jawa Island, an hour’s ride from Jakarta, was too tempting for photographer Zak Noyle to resist.
According to PSFK’s Laura Chase:
Tourism is the country’s fifth-largest foreign currency earner and in danger of being ruined by the polluted ‘Wonderful Indonesia’ image. This was a dangerous shoot because there were large objects in the water, including tree trunks, Noyle said to Surfer Magazine. “But it was worthwhile because of the international response generated by the images.”
Rumor has it it’s not uncommon to find a body or two washing up with the plastic and styrofoam.
And you thought sharks were the thing to watch out for.
