How to remove fungus from the inside of a camera lens
Posted by staff / September 30, 2016The last thing you want to see on an old camera is a fungal growth inside the lens, where no quick clean-up job will do the trick.
Not everyone is comfortable taking apart the camera to do it themselves, so a professional is your best bet in that case.
If you are a determined DIYer, Tom Leonard at PetaPixel describes, in detail, the tools you’ll need and a step by step process to get that old lens squeaky clean.
I’ve spoken to a number of people who’ve shared with me their personal attempts to try to clean it off using various lens cleaners and cloths. Let me save you some trouble: you can’t remove fungus with standard lens cleaning solution. Alcohol, lighter fluid, and ethanol (e.g. Vodka) don’t work either. A combination of elbow grease and any combination of the above solutions will only result in scratches, damage to your lens coatings, and frustration.
Today, I want to share with you the simple, non-damaging way to remove fungus from your lens. If you’re willing to put in a little bit of effort and maybe do something new, you can remove that nasty lens-ruiner and perhaps bring an old classic back to life.
