Beautiful woodwork is rarely the result of simply pounding a nail or two into wherever two pieces of wood meet, and that’s where dovetail joints come into play. Few, though, are quite as beautiful as this one.

Master craftsman Theo Cook of the Robinson House Studio demonstrates how a Japanese sunrise dovetail joint works, which at first glance doesn’t seem possible. In the hands of a skillful woodworker, though, you never know until it all comes together.
