The making of Mt. Rushmore

The project took fourteen years: 1927-1941. It is 60 feet tall and 185 feet wide. Most of the sculpturing was done with dynamite.

  • And they never finished it. They were originally gonna carve 'em all the way down to about mid-chest. In the museum, there's a scale mockup that they were using as the model.

  • It is quite a feat of engineering but of all the tourist things to see in the west, Mount Rushmore is one of the most disappointing and a scourge on the beautiful black hills.  With all due respects to our presidents and to the hard workers who built it but the rock formations to the right of the main Mount Rushmore sculptures are way more interesting.

    We should just dynamite the whole thing.
