The Searcher and the Searchee, a SXSW Story

Right after my Chris Anderson interview at #SXSW, this guy comes up to me and says: “You guys are doing something wrong with Alltop. You’ve put a do-not-index (or something like that) tag in your CSS. This is really going to mess you up. It just changed in the last 15 hours.”

I’m thinking, “Whatever you say. You’re just another SEO ‘guru’ spewing forth witchcraft.” Then I look at his badge: Holy kaw! It’s Matt Cutts.  SEO gurus go through his trash trying to figure out how to game Google, and he’s standing here giving me free advice.

All I can say is, “Yeah, you would know!” Then I explain that I don’t know a thing about his, but I guess it’s because we don’t want to index people’s MyAlltop page–basically, making stuff up on the fly.

He then says, “Oh, yeah, it would make sense not to index people’s individual pages.” My reputation is preserved!

Lesson: Look at people’s badges before you respond. ðŸ™‚

    Guy…
just give a thought… what have u may responded if it was someone say other than Matt Cutt… I know ur sense of humour and thats why i m asking… I still remember what i hv seen in one of your video abt startups at TIE conference… When organisers told u that time is over… ur immediate response was… ‘What u people will not call me next time or what… ‘ and u gathered the laughs and smiles all around… Wanna learn that kind of sense of humour as well… from u…
