Two Mueller prosecutors privately say Trump obstructed justice
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 27, 2019Two Mueller prosecutors have said, in private, that there was sufficient evidence to file federal criminal charges of obstruction of justice against President Trump for his attempts to halt or subvert Mueller’s investigation. It was only Trump’s status as president that stopped the Mueller team from filing such charges.
Though they could not charge Trump, the report detailed kind of a road map with this statement: “If we had confidence after a thorough investigation of the facts that the president clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state. Based on the facts and the applicable legal standards, however, we are unable to reach that judgment.” Hillary Clinton has said to treat the report like Watergate.
Mueller and his team detailed a variety of improper actions by Trump and his team, but they did not charge him because of factual and legal constraints. The report suggested, however, that it may be up to Congress to decide if Trump should be charged. More and more members of the House of Representatives are throwing their weight behind impeaching Trump.
Michael Gerson, former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that House leader should begin laying groundwork for impeachment. He argues that it is their duty as government leaders, and their failure to do so would invite other foreign governments (besides Russia) to meddle in U.S. elections.
