How “Her” used music to shape character

Think about a few of your favorite science fiction movies. Now try to remember their soundtracks. Were they ominous and dark? Intense and electronic? Probably, that’s kind of the sci-fi movie cliché. But “Her” took a different direction. Under the control of two famous indie artists, William Butler (of Arcade Fire) and his friend and musical collaborator Owen Pallett, this movie has a more nostalgic sound. The music has two different styles: happy when the main character is with people, more somber when he’s alone. This reflects his desire to find someone.
