World & U.S. maps of cat vs dog popularity [interactive maps]
Posted by staff / August 1, 2014Always dreamed of living in a place that adores your pet of choice? Where the cat cafe is not big deal or there’s a dog park on every corner?
Don’t sign the closing agreement without checking out these U.S. and world maps compiled by market research firm Euromonitor, which show where your most likely to find those of your breed.
As reported at the Washington Post:
At the state level in the U.S., cats outnumber dogs in the Northeast and Upper Midwest. Dogs are the favorite in the South and Southwest. The most dog-friendly state is Arkansas, where dogs outnumber cats 1.35-to-1. At the other end of the spectrum stands Massachusetts with 1.87 cats for every dog.
“A lot of that simply has to do with population density,” Jared Koerten, a pet industry analyst at Euromonitor, said in an interview. “Many cities just aren’t that dog-friendly.”
On the international level, the number of dog people in India blows cat people out of the water at 10-to-1, whereas cat people predominate in Austria.
It might not be the key to establishing world peace, but it makes for some interesting conversational tidbits.
