Why we itch

Unlike your other organs, however, it’s totally unprotected and exposed to the outside at all times. Itching is one of the mechanisms that evolved to protect your skin. Itches alert you to various things that could be going wrong on your skin and triggers you to act. Scratching overrides the itch signal––as does any other kind of pain, such as pinching or slapping.
