Ben & Jerry’s to add CBD to ice cream
Posted by Annie May / June 1, 2019Ben & Jerry’s has never shied away from drug culture––Phish Food, Cherry Garcia, Half Baked, and Bonnaroo Buzz have all embraced various drug users or drug puns. Now, Ben & Jerry’s is taking another step in that direction by adding CBD to an ice cream.
CEO Matthew McCarthy said, “We’re doing this for our fans. We’ve listened and brought them everything from non-dairy indulgences to on-the-go portions with our Pint Slices. We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we want to give them what they’re looking for in a fun, Ben & Jerry’s way.”
For now, however, the FDA prohibits adding CBD to foods. As a result, McCarthy is encouraging fans to write in to the FDA to advocate for lifting that ban.
CBD is gaining traction in various markets. Walgreens announced that it will sell CBD products in in 1,500 stores. For legal reasons, Walgreens can only sell the products in the following states: Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vermont, South Carolina, Illinois and Indiana. The legal status of CBD is still up in the air, and most companies have decided to wait until there is some kind of certainty, but competition seems to have driven Walgreens into the market.
Likewise, CVS announced it would start selling CBD products in 800 stores across eight states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland and Tennessee. CVS will sell a variety of topical cannabidiol products––things like creams, sprays, and roll-ons, as “an alternative source of relief” for pain.
