Biden’s gaining the evangelical vote
Posted by Catherine Reed / June 22, 2020Trump’s now infamous (and catastrophic) Bible photo-op was an obvious attempt to pander to his religious base. Unfortunately, he’s off the mark. Only some 27% of Americans somewhat or strongly agree that Trump is religious. Meanwhile, 55% either somewhat or strongly disagree. Among evangelicals, less than half, 40%, see Trump as religious, while another 33% disagreed. That means Trump’s Bible gambit may go down in history as one of the stupidest moves in modern political history.
Trump’s approval rating is slipping among Christians, which used to be among his most solid blocs. The New York Times reveals that evangelicals are abandoning him at a slow trickle, while a PRRI and SSRS poll reveals that support among Catholics has plummeted a whopping 23%.
Former President George W. Bush, for example, released a statement that contrasts starkly with Trump’s response. Mike Mullen, Trump’s former Chief of Staff, has also condemned Trump in an Atlantic Op-Ed. Alaska’s Republican Senator agreed with Mattis and admitted she may not vote for Trump in 2020.
Polls in key states show that older voters, one of Trump’s key blocs, are switching their allegiance to Joe Biden. Recent polls have also shown the majority of voters in key swing states disapprove of Trump’s COVID response. Those states, Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, are key swing states and recent polls have also indicated that Biden is more popular among voters.
President Trump’s overall approval rating has fallen one percent from April, while his disapproval rating has risen two percent to 51%. Approval ratings for Trump’s handling of COVID is worse. Only 42% of Americans approve of his performance, down from 50% in March. 51% of Americans say he’s doing a bad job, up from 45% in March.
