Boris Johnson, British PM sick with COVID, moved to ICU
Posted by Catherine Reed / April 7, 2020The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has been moved to intensive care “as a precaution.” Johnson has been battling COVID for several weeks, but his condition worsened. His illness comes after boasting about shaking hands despite COVID fears.
Johnson is not the only public leader to have made terrible decisions. In spite of the increasingly obvious necessity of banning public gatherings, the state of Georgia has reopened state beaches, making them an exemption to the stay-at-home mandates. A Georgia coastal town’s mayor has called the decision reckless.
Meanwhile, in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect its employees and customers, Walmart is limiting the number of customers in its stores to about 20% of their normal capacities. Many stores will also install markers to direct the flow of traffic in the store, ensuring a one-way flow that limits close quarters.
Hopefully these measures are not too late. Iceland has tested nearly 5% of its total population, and the data those tests have revealed is not promising: potentially 50% of carriers of COVID-19 my be asymptomatic. A new American study has also suggested that a subgroup of COVID sufferers have a mild form of the disease that primarily impacts the GI tract, leading to symptoms including nausea and diarrhea.
These facts point to a long haul for the world. The entire country of India is on lockdown as the Prime Minister ordered its 1.3 billion citizens to stay home.
Waffle House, a home-away-from-home for countless southerners, is closing 365 locations until the virus passes. Its workers will remain employed.
Despite these measures, the virus is still spreading, and it might get worse––a cruise ship with more than 40 people with flu-like symptoms are heading towards Florida. It will dock next week.
Rand Paul tested positive for COVID-19. What’s worse, he tested positive six days before he stopped going to work on the Hill, so you can expect more sick senators in the days and weeks to come.
Massachusetts citizens are under a stay-at-home order, the latest state since New Jersey’s governor announced a stay-at-home order. Weddings, parties, and any other kind of gatherings are canceled.
California, Illinois, and New York are all on lockdown in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. The states have ordered that everyone stay at home unless they have a vital reason to be out, including grocery shopping, buying medicine, or exercise. It’s not stopping Californians from hitting the beach, however.
