Buttigieg comes out swinging against Trump
Posted by Robert Leonard / May 27, 2019“Mayor Pete,” as Donald Trump calls him, may be polite, articulate, and kind, but he’s made it clear he’s not going to tolerate Donald Trump’s sass.
Instead, Buttigieg has a “crazy uncle strategy” for dealing with Trump: It’s almost like a sort of crazy uncle management. Like, he’s there. You’re not going to disrespect his humanity. But he thinks what he thinks. There’s not much you can do about it.”
When asked about Trump’s refusal to serve in Vietnam during a Washington Post Live event, Buttigieg said, “I have a pretty dim view of his decision to use his privilege to fake a disability in order to avoid serving in Vietnam.” He also said that Trump belittled disabled people by relying on his wealth to get out of military service––by faking bone spurs.
Buttigieg is relying heavily on his military service to discredit Trump. In recent weeks, Trump has prepared to pardon several soldiers accused of war crimes. Buttigieg has said that such pardons erode “the integrity of the military.”
Trump has made other decisions in the past that harm the military. For example, Trump opted to spend $20 billion over the next two decades in order to keep the USS Harry S. Truman operating, reversing his February decision to retire it. Here’s the problem: the Navy didn’t want that carrier still running. They planned to use that money on more advanced technologies and preparing for cyber warfare.
