Christianity Today calls for Trump’s removal, Trump freaks
Posted by Josh Taylor / December 21, 2019Christianity Today released a surprising article calling for Trump’s removal. They struck a fair tone, but ultimately made a clear point:
“The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.”
Many evangelicals point to Trump’s anti-abortion stance, his stacking the Supreme Court, and his dedication to religious liberty as reasons to support him. But Christianity Today had a response to that, too:
“To the many evangelicals who continue to support Mr. Trump in spite of his blackened moral record, we might say this: Remember who you are and whom you serve. Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior.”
Trump, naturally, took extreme issue with this. He even vowed never to read “ET” again––apparently thinking the magazine was either an entertainment magazine or called “Evangelicalism Today.” Clearly, “ET” will miss his avid readership.
News outlets are making serious hay out of this editorial, using it to further their existing anti-Trump agenda. Let’s try to step outside the partisanship to examine this.
There are two ways to interpret this editorial. The first is really bad for Trump: his base is leaving him. The second is kinda bad: liberal Christians are starting to actively oppose Trump. There are still a huge number of conservative Christians who support Trump, so it seems unlikely that the first option is the case. It’s to soon to say door number two is the right door, but we should definitely be cautious about choosing door number one.
