Facebook won’t delate fake Nancy Pelosi video

Posted by / May 25, 2019

Trump supporters (or Russian agents) have been sharing a video of Nancy Pelosi that’s been slowed down so much that she appears either drunk, confused, or something worse. Facebook has refused to take the video down, because, you know, they care a lot about stopping the spread of false information. Instead of taking it down, they will downgrade the link in users’ feeds and attach a link to a fact-checking site.

This is an incredibly scary development, and one that indicates that Russian trolls have begun their attempts to influence the 2020 elections. In 2013, before Russia annexed Crimea, a Russian general wrote of a new kind of warfare emerging the new millennium: “the enemy’s economy and state command-and-control system will be the priority targets. Besides traditional spheres of armed struggle, the information sphere and space will be actively involved. Countering communications, reconnaissance and navigation systems will play a special role.” The Pelosi videos are perfect examples of such misinformation.

Among those who shared the video was Rudy Giuliani, who himself posted an entirely incomprehensible tweet that has many questioning his mental health. Rudy, if you’re reading this, do you smell burning toast? If so, please seek medical help. Here’s the tweet:

“ivesssapology for a video which is allegedly is a caricature of an otherwise halting speech pattern, she should first stop, and apologize for, saying the President needs an “intervention.” Are.”
