Iowa Rep. Senator Steve King lost in the primary
Posted by Catherine Reed / June 4, 2020Steve King, the Republican Senator from Iowa, has lost his bid for reelection in his state’s primary. King has been widely criticized by both sides of the aisle for his long history of racist comments. His ouster may be a sign that the Republican Party is in trouble. King was swept out of office amidst the protests over systemic racism and police brutality. By advocating for more police brutality and failing to speak out (even simply) against system racism, Donald Trump may have just surrendered the 2020 election to Joe Biden. Even the polls are showing Joe Biden with a 10-point lead over Trump in the 2020 race for the White House.
It’s also easy to argue that Trump’s bungling of the George Floyd response has led to riots in cities across the United States, many of which have involved violent police responses to peaceful protests. Trump called George Floyd’s brother in a bid to garner some good PR, but he bungled that too––George Floyd’s brother said that Trump was dismissive on the call and didn’t give him a chance to speak. Many moderate to left-leaning Republicans may wind up fleeing the party for Biden, who suddenly seems like a safe choice.
