LAX passengers may have been exposed to measles

Posted by / May 6, 2019

Zombie movies used to be metaphorical––the walking dead represented something like postmodern ennui. But now, thanks to the rise of the anti-vaccination movement, the threat of an illness sweeping through society is real. And this is how it starts: two individuals with confirmed cases of measles traveled through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) recently, potentially exposing passengers tot he disease. Anyone who traveled through LAX Terminal 2 on April 30 from 7:45 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. or May 1 from 7:10 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. may have been exposed to measles.

Anyone who traveled through the terminal at these times should watch out for the following symptoms: Itchy, watery eyes, a rising fever, and the gradual emergence of a rosy-red rash.

The number of confirmed measles cases has reached 704 spread across 22 states, the highest number since 1994. There have been thirteen outbreaks across the country. Of those, six occurred within closely knit, under-immunized communities.

Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, has said, “Forty-four cases were directly imported from other countries, and 9 out of 10 of those individuals were in unvaccinated persons. All 40 were old enough to get vaccinated.”

New York has been among the hardest hit by the virus. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has declared a public emergency. Hopefully the same does not happen in Los Angeles.

More health.
