Trump takes to Twitter to complain about twitter
Posted by Thomas Bush / May 28, 2020In what future scholars will call definitive proof that we’re living in a dystopian nightmare, President Donald Trump took to twitter to complain about twitter:
Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen. We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016. We can’t let a more sophisticated version of that….
So much for small government? But it’s no surprise Trump is acting out. Donald Trump’s 2020 chances aren’t looking great. As of Memorial Day, Trump’s disapproval rating is at a whopping 53.5%, and his approval rating is down to 42.7%. According to a different poll, 53% of Americans disapproved “strongly” or “somewhat” with Trump’s handling of COVID.
But you don’t even have to look at polls to know that, you can look at his behavior. The more he lashes out, especially at women, the worse he’s doing. Lately, he’s taken to retweeting sexism-laden taunts (including the word “skank”) towards Hillary Clinton (good lord, LET IT GO people, it was 4 years ago) and Nancy Pelosi.
A few days ago, Trump tweeted that he’s angry Fox News isn’t do anything to help Republicans, and him specifically, get elected. And then Fox News shared a poll that shows Biden with a healthy lead. Trump, meanwhile, shares tweets with very different data.
Polls in key states show that older voters, one of Trump’s key blocs, are switching their allegiance to Joe Biden. Recent polls have also shown the majority of voters in key swing states disapprove of Trump’s COVID response. Those states, Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, are key swing states and recent polls have also indicated that Biden is more popular among voters.
Republican insiders are beginning to vocalize concerns about losing the Senate in 2020. With a handful of states vulnerable, including Maine and North Caroline, the Senate could swing blue. They’re right to worry. President Trump’s approval rating has fallen one percent from April, while his disapproval rating has risen two percent to 51%. Approval ratings for Trump’s handling of COVID is worse. Only 42% of Americans approve of his performance, down from 50% in March. 51% of Americans say he’s doing a bad job, up from 45% in March.
Two noteworthy Republicans have are turning their backs on Donald Trump. Mike DeWine, Ohio’s governor, broke with Trump early in the COVID crisis by moving to lockdown early. His decisiveness has paid off, and he is likely to win reelection as a result.
Meanwhile, retired Republican Senator Jeff Flake will not be voting for Trump––in fact, he’ll be voting for Biden. He said the best thing for the Republican party would be a defeat.
According to a Pew Research survey, the American public thinks Trump did a poor job handling the COVID crisis. 65% of Americans think Trump was too slow in responding to the crisis. Polls also reveal that Americans are more concerned that the country will be “opened for business” too soon, as opposed to too late, explicitly contradicting Trump’s statements.
Overall, the COVID crisis has been bad for Trump. Historically, in times of national crisis, Americans have rallied around the president. During 9/11, for example, George W. Bush’s approval ratings spiked. Unusually, Donald Trump is not seeing the “rally around the flag” effect. His approval ratings briefly rose, but in the past week his ratings have dropped to pre-coronavirus levels, largely as a result of his daily briefings.
Trump’s approval ratings also suffered when he gave FEMA permission to limit sale of essential goods to Canada, saying that he would use the Defense Production Act to stop US companies from selling personal protective equipment, such as N95 masks, and other medical equipment to Canada. Trump also directly asked 3M not to sell N95 masks to Canada.
