10 tricks happy people don’t fall for
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 3, 2014The world, our society, and our very own minds all conspire against our happiness. I know it sounds crazy, but think about these ten things that happy people don’t believe. They’re all lies we’re told every day. Things like, “You’re in control of your life!” and “suffering is bad.” The fact is, most of us are only in control of a teeny tiny bit of our lives, and the human condition is one of suffering. Those two examples are largely lies we incorporate from society at large. Our very own mind is guilty of lying, too, though. It often tells us that we need to work harder to prove something. But that’s a dark road, since it convinces us that our happiness depends on others’ approval. That’s an unstable foundation for happiness.

Posted by Josh Taylor / April 1, 2014There’s no better inspiration than that which comes from your favorite films. For some reason, the memories attached to those films taps into a well of motivation. That feeling you get when you think of The Lion King, for example, especially when you think of Rafiki saying, “Oh yes, the past can hurt. But you can either run from it, or learn from it.” Or when you think about Dumbledore advising Harry, “It is not our abilities that show what we truly are… it is our choices.”
Read More50 Amazing things that happen every five seconds
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 1, 2014The internet sometimes tricks us into thinking the world is smaller than it is. But every now and then the internet gives us some perspective on just how massive our world is. For example, did you know that every five seconds, Dunkin’ Donuts sells over a hundred cups of coffee, Americans eat 2750 hot dogs, and 35,000 Coca Cola products are consumed.
Read More10 mind blowing Siri hacks to boost your productivity
Posted by Josh Taylor / March 29, 2014I love to use the iPhone’s Siri function to make me laugh. I’ll ask it to tell me a joke, or ask it, “What does the fox say?” But I rarely use it to get actually work done because, up until now, I thought it was useless for that. Apparently, though, Siri can be supremely helpful. For example, I used to tell Siri to send a text. Then I would have to walk it through who would get the text and what the text would say. Now I know you can just say, “Tell so-and-so that I’m going to be ten minutes late.” If Siri doesn’t understand a name, you can add a phonetic spelling to the contact card, and then Siri will understand it. Most impressively, you can set Siri to give you location-based reminders.

Posted by Josh Taylor / March 29, 2014With the state of the economy, more and more students are going straight back to school upon graduation from their undergrad years. But is that always best? Maybe, maybe not, it’s up to the individual to decide if post-undergrad work is right for them, especially when it comes to business school. Whether or not you choose to go to b-school, you should be aware that it can’t teach you everything about owning your own business. Hannah Helsabeck, owner of Wind Mint, offers some advice to fill in the gap.

Posted by Josh Taylor / March 29, 2014YouTube is such a vast beast that it’s almost impossible to track down things you aren’t linked to or know the titles of. That’s what Cracked is for. These guys obviously have enough time on their hands to scour YouTube for the most insanely silly, and hysterical videos. I don’t want to know what dark alley of YouTube they were looking in, but I’m glad I don’t have to go down there myself.
Read More8 phrases that make you sound condescending
Posted by Josh Taylor / March 27, 2014Sometimes, it’s hard to choose your words carefully, especially as a leader. Leaders get busy, stressed out, emotional, and as a natural result leaders sometimes get a bit short with people. While we can’t slough of our bodies and ignore stress, exhaustion, or frustration, we can train ourselves not to say phrases that are especially annoying to our employees or peers. Many of these phrases are simple, like, “I know you’re stressed about this, but you shouldn’t be because…” Why is this so annoying? Because the person is stressed! Telling them they’re wrong to be stressed only makes it worse. Acknowledge how they feel and move forward from there.

Posted by Josh Taylor / March 26, 2014I don’t believe in subliminal messaging, but these logos almost make me question that. I knew about the arrow hidden in the FedEx logo, and the “31” hidden in the Baskin Robbins logo. But I never noticed the secret hidden in the Toblerone logo, or the one in the Tostitos logo, or even the one in the Goodwill logo! This video is kind of mind-blowing, now that I think about it.

Posted by Josh Taylor / March 20, 2014There are several stages to the experience of looking at these drawings. First is disbelief. You may ask yourself such questions as, “Is this for real?” “Is that really pencil?” “How much time does this Ramon Bruin guy have on his hands?” Next will be amazement, followed quickly by another round of disbelief. But rest assured, these pictures do appear to be in 3D, but there is some trickery involved. Notice that they all have a real object in them, and they’re photographed at specific angles. Now that you know that, are you less impressed, or more impressed that a guy was able to plan out the exact object and camera angle needed to make this art 3D?

Read More7 epic, 100-year-old pranks
Posted by Josh Taylor / March 19, 2014I used to be an amateur prankster in my office days. I once suspended the contents of someone’s desk from the ceiling directly above them, covered someone’s desk in plastic wrap, and some other, more embarrassing pranks that I don’t care to admit at the moment. That being said, none of my pranks were as epic as these century-old pranks. Unfortunately, some of them can’t really be done anymore since they involve outdated technology.
