Why male birth control is so complex
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 2, 2018There are a handful of birth control options to couples engaging in family planning: coitus interruptus, condoms, and female birth control pills. You will undoubtedly notice that male birth control pills are not on that list. Recently, scientists announced that they were one step closer to creating the elusive male pill––which you’ve probably heard a million times. But really, they’re close this time. This video explains how the pill might work and why it’s so complex.
Read MoreHow Snow White was made
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 2, 2018Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was––and arguably still is––Disney’s greatest masterpiece. This movie represented a major leap in animation, and this video tells the story of what Walt Disney did to make this movie so incredible. He started by making his artists attend life-drawing classes, where they learned to make animated characters look more like real humans. This enabled them to create characters who were more relatable, and this in turn disproved his critics, who believed that audiences would never empathize with an animated character.
Read MoreHere’s why old buildings have the same leaf design
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 2, 2018Once you watch this video, you will never be able to unsee the leaf design on old buildings. Those leaves are called acanthus leaves. A Roman writer describes a myth about that leaf, which helped inspire the popularity of this leafy design. This video walks you trough this history of column design (which everyone kind of remembers from middle school social studies, right?) and explains the origins of this design, as well as where it still appears today.
Read MoreIs this where aliens come from?
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 1, 2018There are a few theories about where aliens come from. You see, when a mommy alien and a daddy alien love each other very much….Wait, that’s not what this video is about. It’s about where the idea of aliens comes from. And the argument this video makes is pretty interesting. Essentially, he suggests that our conceptions of aliens come from the lost “aliens” in our own histories: Neanderthals, lost indigenous peoples, and so on.

Posted by Josh Taylor / April 1, 2018During the early Trump years (yes, that sentence sounds like its from a very depressing history book of the future), a guy named John Turano donned some Spartan armor and attended Trump rallies to battle with Antifa protesters. After a few bloody bouts at different protests, Turano changed his mind. He realized that some of the people on his side were also racist, homophobic, and hateful. That’s not who he was, so he jumped ship.
Read MoreHow to cook like a Viking
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 1, 2018This video is not about cooking like a figurative, Ralph Wiggum-esque viking (see below). Instead, this video is about cooking like an actual Viking. It is set in the wilderness, and it uses mostly simple tools so you don’t need anything special to make it. Your hands don’t need to be as dirty as these guys’ hands are, but maybe it makes the food taste better.
Read MoreWhy Black Mirror is so good
Posted by Josh Taylor / March 31, 2018For those who haven’t seen it, Black Mirror is a lot like the Twilight Zone. The major difference is that Black Mirror focuses on the different ways that technology is destroying humanity and not the ways that the atomic bomb will destroy humanity. This episode of Lessons from the Screenplay deconstructs one episode of Black Mirror and highlights how effective the storytelling is. If you don’t already watch Black Mirror, you’re going to want to after this.
Read MoreYou Suck at Cooking teaches you to make pesto
Posted by Josh Taylor / March 31, 2018You Suck at Cooking has a unique…let’s call it a voice. His videos specialize in teaching bachelors (or those with the cooking skills of your average unskilled-at-cooking bachelor) to make some of the most basic dishes you can imagine. In this particularly clever episode, he teaches you to make pesto, or as he calls it, the Italian basil smoothie (ew). Besides the recipe, there is a whole bizarre and hilarious storyline to enjoy.

Posted by Josh Taylor / March 31, 2018Brad’s wife Liz is paralyzed from the waist down. Being wheelchair bound makes it difficult for her to do all the outdoorsy stuff with her family. So her husband modified a wheelchair that would allow her to do all the fun family activities she wants to do, such as going to the beech or going on hikes. Most importantly, though, it allows her to continue doing her favorite activity: training horses. Take a look and prepare to be inspired.
Read MoreHow the NRA manipulates the gun control debate (for gun companys’ benefit)
Posted by Josh Taylor / March 30, 2018Decades ago, when Americans were starting to realize that cigarettes might not be good for them, tobacco companies played a major part in the debate about the health impacts of smoking. It’s kind of crazy, when you think about it, that companies so invested in the success of their product would have any say in the object truth of their product. You’d need objective third parties, right? This Vox video argues that we’re doing the same thing with the NRA. The NRA represents gun companies, and the more we let the NRA talk in the gun control debate, the more we let companies that sell guns have a say in how we legislate them.
Read MoreThe road from punk to electronic music
Posted by Josh Taylor / March 30, 2018It may seem hard to believe that something like “God Save the Queen” and “Sandstorm” could be connected, but it’s true. This video lays out the fascinating evolution that led from bands like the Sex Pistols to Darude. Much of that evolution hinges on the introduction of the synthesizer to punk, ushering in the post-punk movement. Post-punk––think New Order––is already close to electronica. And from there it’s a short jump to something like Kraftwerk.

Posted by Josh Taylor / March 30, 2018We all suffer from procrastination every now and then. For some of us, though, it causes real harm. This psychologist believes that if you understand what procrastination is then it will be easier for you to stop doing it. He then offers some practical advice to beat the procrastination bug. For example, break down tasks into their smallest concrete parts. If you have an abstract task, it’s easy to say you’ll do it later. But when you have something very specific to do, your brain wants to do it.
