Tesla stolen with only a smartphone
Posted by Josh Taylor / September 17, 2018Cybersecurity is not yet a “sexy” topic. But the more “sexy” cyber crimes are committed, the more people will pay attention to cybersecurity. This video is one of those crimes. A Tesla was recently stolen from the mall of America with ease. As you might imagine, this cybercrime was accompanied by a bit of social engineering: “The person allegedly responsible for taking the car is believed to have reached out to Tesla’s customer support to add the stolen Model 3 to his Tesla account by its vehicle identification number. Once the vehicle was accessible on a smartphone that was signed into this person’s account, he was reportedly able to unlock the car and drive away without ever needing a key.”
Read MoreDoctor reacts to the TV show “ER”
Posted by Josh Taylor / September 17, 2018Even today, the TV show ER is among the most popular hospital shows of all time, up there with House, M.D. and (believe it or not) General Hospital. It was full of fascinating medical scenarios and lots of medical jargon, but it was also a television show, so it was not totally accurate. This video features a real-life doctor commenting on some of the scenes in the show. It’s not all medical jargon, either, he offers some interesting insight on the current state of medicine.

Posted by Josh Taylor / September 16, 2018In 2006, economist Ann Pettifor claimed that the economy was heading for a brick wall. Two years later, the economy was in the tubes. From the article: “Now she thinks the global economy is in danger once more thanks to huge corporate debt, and the prospect of rising interest rates in the United States.” What does this mean? Pettifor says, “We’re seeing that companies who borrowed too much money at very low rates of interest are now finding the value of their collateral falling. Their debt is rising and the interest on that debt is rising too.” And she’s not the only one worried about these things.

This video explains the process of fighting a wildfire, including when elite firefighters parachute into the woods, when fire departments use plans, and what strategies these units employ. Watching this video will give you an even greater appreciation of what firefighters do on the front lines.
Read MoreWhere “Ok” came from
Posted by Josh Taylor / September 16, 2018The word “ok” (or “okay,” or “o.k.”) is among the most recognizable words in the world. But where did it come from? There have been rumors that “ok” came from Choctaw word and any other number of origins. The word is actually rather new, dating to the 1830s. It comes from an abbreviation for “all correct” that was popularized during the presidential election of 1840. It gained further popularity when telegraph operators began using the phrase.

Posted by Josh Taylor / September 15, 2018San Francisco has a major crime problem, especially when it comes to cars. If you park in the wrong neighborhood, it doesn’t matter if you hide your belongings or not––you’re going to return to your car to find your window smashed. The problem is so bad, in fact, that an Inside Edition crew went to investigate. They brought a bait car with them, hoping to catch some thieves in the act. Thieves took the bait and then some––they also robbed the camera crew’s car as well!
Read MoreDallas police accused of smearing man killed in his own appartment
Posted by Josh Taylor / September 15, 2018Earlier this month, Botham Jean was killed. A police officer who lived next door entered his apartment, allegedly by accident. Thinking it was her apartment and that Jean, who was black, was an intruder, the police officer shot him. As police investigated, they found about ten grams of marijuana and a marijuana grinder. Critics are claiming that the police, in releasing this information, were attempting to smear Jean, who friends, family, and church members laud as a gentle and loving man.
Read MoreWhy clever dialogue can hurt a movie
Posted by Josh Taylor / September 15, 2018Aaron Sorkin’s writing style is inimitable. His dialogue is always snappy and clever, and it represents the best of what human speech is capable of. Some people love him for that. But others don’t agree. This video analyzes The Social Network, in which every single character––even the nameless side characters––is unflappable and perfectly witty. The video argues that the characters actually lose some of their humanity becaus of this writing, and the movie suffers as a result.

Posted by Josh Taylor / September 14, 2018Three crack vending machines appeared throughout Suffolk County, New York. They were cemented to the ground to prevent theft or removal, and they claimed to sell pens. “According to officials, however, $2 got would-be customers a whole lot more. Disassembling the pen revealed a glass tube and filters, essentially a crack pipe kit.” Police have removed the machines that they have found.
Read MoreGeorgia school brings back paddling
Posted by Josh Taylor / September 14, 2018This piece of news is a mixed bag. Of course, beating children with a paddle (which some schools called “The Board of Education”) is probably a bad way of instilling adult responsibility. The Georgia School of Innovation and the Classics (GSIC) instituted the paddle and sent out permission slips (yep) to parents for their permission. About a third gave permission. So that’s the bad side.
Read MoreJohn Oliver on felony disenfranchisement
Posted by Josh Taylor / September 14, 2018In many states, if you are convicted of a felony, then you lose certain rights. You can no longer own a gun, for example, and far more importantly you could be barred from voting for years after your prison sentence is over––sometimes forever. Florida, perhaps unsurprisingly, is particularly bad about disenfranchising felons for long periods of time with arbitrary courts that decide, willy nilly, which felons can get their voting rights back. This video explains why that’s so bad.
Read MoreTesla employee says the company is anti-union
Posted by Josh Taylor / September 13, 2018Elon Musk, like Steve Jobs, gets a lot of slack for his ridiculous behavior. As we suggested in an earlier article, Elon Musk might be trying to throw up a smokescreen with his erratic actions. This article, we think, is another piece of evidence in a long line that debunks his humbuggery. It reveals that, although Musk claims to be neutral on the idea of unions, any union activity in Tesla quickly gets shut down. So much for Musk’s utopian idealism.
