Why dad jokes aren’t that bad
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 30, 2018Dad jokes seem to be the latest thing that everyone loves to hate. They elicit eye rolls and laughs all in the same room. Even though they’re considered “bad” humor––that is, not clever or elevated––do we need to give dad jokers such disrespect? Actually, dad jokes are a part of an important stage of development for kids since dad jokes are a form of play. Play helps kids develop skills for the real world, in this case, verbal acuity, humor, and cheerfulness. Kids who have these traits tend to be more successful, so by all means embrace the dad joke.

Posted by Josh Taylor / April 30, 2018Jack and Tim are a father and son music duo. Both play guitar, and they two co-write their songs. They both have great guitar talent, and their singing voices are downright stunning. Tim’s favorite show is “Britain’s Got Talent,” so it’s only fitting that the two performed on the show. They were so good, in fact, that Simon Cowell gave them the Golden Buzzer, meaning that they will go straight to the finals.
Read MoreWhy you have to make your own meaning
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 30, 2018Douglas Adams organized his famous Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series around a single question: What is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything? It’s a question that we all have in common, the question that pops into our heads when we lay down and sleep fails to come. Unfortunately, there isn’t much meaning offered anymore––even if you’re religious, it can be hard to find meaning. That’s why this video argues that meaning is a jumper (a sweater) that you need to knit yourself. In other words, if you want to find purpose in life, you need to create your own meaning.

Posted by Josh Taylor / April 29, 2018We all have that friend who loves essential oils. Got a headache? Lavender oil. Tummy ache? Mint oil. Depression? Amber oil. Whatever ails you, there’s an oil for it. But is there any science backing those claims? Well, some of the more extreme claims don’t have much scientific support, of course. But there is loads of evidence suggesting that essential oils do impact your mood. One study showed that essential oils were more powerful relaxants than calming music.
Read MoreWhat you CAN’T do with a billion bucks
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 29, 2018Have you ever played the game with your friend where you list all the things you’d buy with a billion dollars? You probably listed things like jacuzzis, supercars, private jets, houses, and all the M&Ms on the planet. Yes, a billion bucks could buy you any of those things, and probably all of them. But what you can’t buy with a billion dollars is more significant than what you can buy, just ask Bill Gates, who is featured in this video via interview. He explains what world problems you can’t change with a billion dollars.

Posted by Josh Taylor / April 29, 2018By now, you have heard about all the ways that Facebook has violated your privacy, even if you’re not a Facebook user. It got so bad, in fact, that Mark Zuckerberg was called in front of a Senate committee for a hearing about how Facebook was used to manipulate voters in the 2016 election. That was an important development, made all the more significant by the fact that it was given the Bad Lip Reading treatment.
Read MoreThe Fall of the Aztec Empire, explained
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 28, 2018In 1522, the Aztec Empire fell. The immediate cause was Hernán Cortés. He and his band of Conquistadores marched through the Aztec Empire and wound up at the capital, where they––to put it mildly––wrecked havoc. But that’s not the whole story, as you might imagine, since it would be crazy to think that this group of sailors could have toppled an empire. In reality, Cortés exploited longstanding rivalries and grudges within the Aztec Empire for their own advantage.
Read MoreThe origins of breakfast (and 3 meals a day)
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 28, 2018Most Americans have been raised on this simple axiom: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” But where did that idea come from? Was it from the Industrial Sausage Complex? Big Ova? Well, partly. But this video digs much deeper into the past to look at different cultures’ eating habits throughout history. Most cultures have had a word for the food that they eat in the beginning of the day, but the content of those meals differed wildly.

Anyone who is familiar with the show won’t be surprised that Alton Brown spent his time on Hot Ones lecturing and scientifically categorizing the different spicy wings. Posted by Josh Taylor / April 27, 2018Everybody loves sloths, there’s no arguing with that. And we’d all love to cuddle a sloth…but imagine a sloth cuddling you! That’s not possible now, but there once walked giant sloths. There were also giant dragonflies that had wingspans ten times the size of modern dragonflies. They were probably so big because there was more oxygen when they existed. On the less cute side, imagine a crocodile nearly thirty-feet long. Enjoy that nightmare fuel, and more, in this awesome video.

Posted by Josh Taylor / April 27, 2018Everyone struggles with time management at some point. The worst thing that happens during these times is we get stuck in loops of trying to make ourselves more efficient, but ultimately just wasting time trying to become more efficient. Well, this video explains how to use a machine-tested way to be more efficient. The upshot is this: don’t try to do the most important or labor-intensive tasks first. You’re better off just picking tasks at random.
Read MoreHow (and why) IBM quietly forced out older employees
Posted by Josh Taylor / April 27, 2018International Business Machines, better known as IBM, was once king of the hell in the technology industry. But alas, times chance and IBM has fallen from its former position of glory. As a result, IBM had a lot of older employees who were earning more and more money from the company. Unfortunately, the company itself wasn’t earning much money, losing out to companies like Google and Facebook. If IBM wanted to survive, it had to trim some expenses. So…they “invited” some older workers to leave.
